Building a DIY Ledge

Tired of getting snaked by all the groms at your local skatepark? Don’t have a local park? With a lucky find, a trip to Home Depot, some friends to help and a place to put everything, you can make your own DIY.

The other day some friends of mine stumbled upon an 11’ foot long plastic pipe at an abandoned property that used to be an old skate spot. Seemed like a good time to repurpose this pipe into a proper skateable ledge. Our friend Kevo came up with the idea to prop the pipe up on cinder blocks, similar to all those parking block ledges you’ve seen in every Crailtap video

The mission has begun.

They brought the pipe into our local skate shop where we drilled a few holes along the bottom and went to Home Depot to buy our supplies. We bought cinder blocks, Quickrete, a caulking gun, Liquid Nails, and some 1/2 inch rebar, then tall cans of Modelo at the gas station down the street. Construction crews’ gotta stay hydrated right?

Once we drove to the building site, we cut the rebar into 12 inch pieces and hammered them into the holes in the pipe so they stuck out 6 inches. We laid the cinder blocks down and broke out the Liquid Nails, adhering the cinderblocks both to the ground and to each other. Liquid Nails drys pretty quick so we immediately began mixing some Quikrete in a Home Depot bucket. We poured concrete into the cinder blocks and lowered the pipe onto the blocks rebar side down. The rebar sticking 6 inches into concrete makes it stable. As long as no one touches the pipe, it should set just fine.

Almost there.

The best part about working with concrete is having fun with the leftovers. We used our excess crete to solidify this pole jam.

We let the ledge sit for 24 hours while the concrete dried. I was a little skeptical about how sturdy it would be but the good homie Kevo came correct. It was the best DIY ledge I’ve ever skated.

If you build it, they will come.

Almost overnight the spot blew up and people in our area have been skating it every day. Someone even brought a trash can to keep the place clean. It’s rad to see people enjoying something you helped make. Only a matter of time before it gets destroyed, but thats the name of the game right? Get out there and build!

Big ups to Kevo for getting us all psyched to build.
